‘Abstract is not a style. I simply want to make a surface work.’ – Joan Mitchell

Women painters have been at the heart of abstract art’s development over the past century, from those who propelled the language forward such as Liubov PopovaHelen FrankenthalerLee KrasnerJoan Mitchell, Alma Thomas and Yayoi Kusama; to those who, building upon the legacy of earlier generations, use abstraction to open new paths to optical, emotional, and cultural expression, including Howardena Pindell, Mary HeilmannAdriana VarejãoElizabeth Neel, and Varda Caivano. This exhibition celebrates more than 50 women artists who have shaped, transformed, and continue to expand the language of abstract painting.
